ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Don Greco is a native St. Louisian who began playing organized football as a seven-year-old in the now defunct Northside Youth Association (NYA).  After seven seasons of JFL Football, Greco played for Gerald Nordman at Riverview Gardens High School in the rugged Suburban North Conference. As a “Ram”, Greco’s teams won a league championship and advanced into the 1975 Missouri Play-offs.  Greco won a spot on the All-Conference and All-District Team as a senior and attended Western Illinois University on a football scholarship.  At Western, Greco was a four-year starter, two-time captain, two-time All-League selection, and “Lineman of the Year” as a senior in the Mid Continent Conference.  Greco was also a two-time All-American and his team's Most Valuable Player as a junior and a senior.  He wore number 72 in college and was the 72nd player selected in the third round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Detroit “Lions”. Greco spent a little more than five years in Detroit and started on teams that earned two post-season berths and won the 1983 NFC - Central Division Title.

When his NFL career ended he returned to St. Louis and immediately started his coaching career.  He helped his brother, Jim, at Riverview Gardens before spending a season as a sophomore coach at Parkway North.  The following year Greco left for Pattonville High School and spent one year as a varsity assistant before taking over the job in 1989.  During Greco’s inaugural season, his team tied the school record for the most wins in a season and entered the post season for just the second time.  In fourteen seasons, Greco led the “Pirates” to thirteen District Titles, four Suburban North Titles, eight Sectional Titles and three appearances in the state semifinals.  Three of his teams finished the regular season undefeated.  Greco’s 2000 “Pirate” team made an appearance in the “Show Me Bowl”, but fell short of a state crown.

During his fourteen seasons, he established the longest tenure and the winningest record in the history of the Pattonville Program, (119-45). Greco has been named “Coach of the Year” by the St. Louis Post Dispatch, St. Louis “Rams” and the National Football Foundation. In 2001, he served as Defensive Coordinator for the River City “Renegades” of the Indoor Professional Football League.  Greco has done work on local cable television as a color commentator for the St. Louis “Believers” and “Rage” Indoor Football Teams.  He is a member of the St. Louis Post Dispatch “All-Millennium Team”, selected in December of 1999.  In 2000, he was inducted into the Western Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2004, he was nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame.  Coach Greco was recently inducted into the St. Louis Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011.  He is a teacher/coach in the Pattonville School District and spends much of his free time coaching little league sports.  He is happily married to his wife, Diana, and the couple has three wonderful children: Zachary, Madison, and Alyssa. Contact Don at coachdg67@gmail.com.
